Canister filter question?

whats a rule of thumb on cleaning your filter? i have a cascade 1000 hooked to a 55 gal and you cant see when its dirty cuz the filter casing is blue and the hoses are black. im familiar with tank maintenance but this is my first canister i cant use visual to determine when to clean.
