How do I save a movie from a mini DV camcorder in individual clips, preferably named by date?

I would like to transfer video from my mini DV camcorder, but instead of getting one large file, have each clip saved by itself, preferably with the date in the title. Both Pinnacle Studio and Adobe Premiere can separate the clips for use in their own programs, but I can't find a way to easily save them so that all video programs can read them. I have Pinnacle Studio and a trial version of Adobe Premiere Elements, but would be willing to buy something else if it works. Thanks!
