How to save lilac trees?

My neighbor recently chopped my three large lilac trees down to a few inches off the ground (without my permission, grrr argh). I live in Minnesota and this happed in mid July. Is there anything I can do to save the trees from dying over the winter? Normal pruning would occur in late winter so these are going to be exposed to the harsh elements.
