Is it a problem that Michael Steele is pro choice?
No, the problem is that Steele is the head of a party that's very splintered in its goals and ideology. More often than not, he angers a portion of the party when he speaks out... then alienates moderates and independents when he apologizes. His initial comments and then his later reversal of position on 'pro-choice' is yet another indicator of the inherent hypocrisy of a party that promotes 'small government' yet wants the government to intrude upon people's private lives. The party that promotes 'mavericks' and 'personal responsibility', but can't handle the resulting 'individualism'. As is the case with the proverbial tree limb... If they can't bend, they will break.
